Do you enjoy working with children? Are you looking for a busy but rewarding job for the summer? Are you happy to survive on little sleep for a few weeks? If so, read on to discover the world of summer school jobs…
Summer schools vary in size but most schools will follow a similar programme – English lessons, sports, games and activities during the afternoon and evening entertainment, such as barbecues, discos, karaoke, bowling, staff v. students volleyball – there’s never a dull moment! There are off-site excursions which may well include visits to London as well as other major towns and cities in England, theme parks, wildlife parks - there is no shortage of interesting and exciting things to do and places to visit.
Boys and girls, aged between 7 and 18, come from all over the world and usually there is a good mix of different nationalities which all helps the children to speak in English, as the common language. Living in an international community helps the children to learn about each other’s different cultures, giving them a greater understanding of how other people live their lives around the world.
The schools themselves are usually situated in beautiful locations around the country, sometimes in historic buildings set in extensive grounds. There are often wonderful facilities for the children to use perhaps giving them an opportunity to try an activity that they have never done before.
Summer School is all about looking after children and working professionally to give them the most memorable and enjoyable experience during their time in the UK.
Many summer school jobs are residential and staff are required to live on-site and take responsibility for the pastoral needs and welfare of the children. There are many different roles available from teachers to activities staff, from life-guards to tennis coaches. Staff are expected to be courteous, friendly and professional whatever the situation – and there will be many which will test you to the limits of frustration and tiredness but working in an international summer school is an unforgettable experience, one which many staff repeat year after year.
One thing is for sure, whatever your role, you will find a great sense of camaraderie amongst the staff and you will have the opportunity to forge lifelong friendships while working in a job that is fulfilling and rewarding. |
